When I was sixteen I got a summer job at my local marina on the river Thames at Bray. I helped to clean and repair small boats. I enjoyed the job so much that getting paid was a bonus. The guy I was helping was so impressed with me that he said he would have a job for me anytime I wanted.

A few weeks into my summer vacation one of the other guys offered to give me an old boat to repair. I was unable to hide my happiness and jumped for joy, and couldnt wait to get started !

Marinas in the Lake George and Saratoga region aren't all about selling boats. Most of them offer many services -- including rentals, repair and equipment sales.

Others offer much simpler services, like a boat launch ramp and gasoline.

Dunham's Bay Sea Ray is one of the area's largest marinas, with four locations, including Lake George and Latham. Boat sales are a big business for Dunham's Bay, but it offers much more than exclusive sales and rentals of Sea Ray and Silverton power boats.

"We're a full-service facility -- we sell and service power boats, we have dockage on Lake George and Lake Champlain, and we have a small ship's store in all our locations," said Mark Cioffi, sales manager at Dunham's Bay's Latham store.

Cioffi said the ship's store sells parts for boats, lifejackets, boating accessories, radios and cleaning supplies.

"Everything you would need for a boat, we have it," Cioffi said.

Dunham's Bay also stores boats for the winter at three of its locations, and does winterizing -- shrink-wrapping boats in plastic to protect them from winter weather, even if they are stored outdoors.

The Shoreline Restaurant and Marina in the village of Lake George offers perhaps the widest range of services of any local marina. Not only does it offer the famous cruises on the lake, it also has a separate sales and storage department, boat rentals, parasailing, the Shoreline Restaurant and King Neptune's Pub.

"The restaurant is family-oriented, it's a great place to come after a day on the lake," said Kevin Griswold, the marketing and sales director for Shoreline. "As for rentals, we have 18 to 22 you-drive boats that are 16-18 feet, and 12 pontoon boats. And the parasailing is for all ages."

Shoreline's sales and storage department are located on Sewell Street, offering boats by Chris Craft, Fountain and Doral. Shoreline's docks are reserved for its own customers, however, and not open to the public.

Shoreline at one time also rented WaveRunners, but personal watercraft have been banned from the south basin of Lake George.

Fischer's Marina on Warner Bay in Lake George gave up selling boats about five years ago, said Rose Marie Fischer, one of the owners. However, Fischer's does have runabouts and pontoon boats for rent, a full-service repair shop and ship store, and a public launch that includes a quick launch feature.

"We put the boat in the water for you and you're all set to go," Fischer said.

Hulett's Island View Marina in Hulett's Landing is a small marina that rents canoes and kayaks and features a small grocery store. They also sell gas and have a public launch ramp that can accommodate power boats as well as smaller craft.

Saratoga Lake also has several marinas, three of the largest being South Shore Marina, Point Breeze Marine and Saratoga Boatworks. All of them are similar -- full-service marinas and boat dealerships, offering rentals, repairs, public launches and ship's stores, as well as shrink-wrapping, winterization and indoor and outdoor winter storage. Hoist the sails

From making toy boats I progressed to bigger and better boats. My most funny memory is of an empty oil drum which we cut up so two of us could sit in it.I was about 12 at the time and was already good at using basic tools. AS fun as it was the oil drum got us in a lot of trouble with mum. We would walk home wet and filthy everytime we went out !

From the age of five I began to make boats out of anything I could. I started with bits of wood,but to this day I remember my easiest and fun toy boats were made of plastic soda bottles. I would spend hours collecting empty 2 litre bottles and either cut them with a pair of scissors or tie them up together with wire and a mast stuck in the middle with glue.

I first fell in love with boats when I was about five years old. We lived over a hundred miles away from the ocean, so it was a real treat to go to the coast and rent a boat out for the day.
From the first family day trip I decided I wanted my own boat!
